  >  Life   >  Looking After Your Home When on Holiday: 4 Ways to Peace of Mind

We all deserve some time away, and if you are someone who loves to go travelling, you want to make sure that your home is safe and sound. So, if you are looking for ways to ensure your house is safe and secure while you are travelling or away for a few days, here are some things to bear in mind so you can enjoy some well-earned peace of mind:

Be Ready for the Unexpected

If there is one thing that trips us up every single time, it’s that we’re not well-versed in what can actually happen to our home while we’re away. There are things like problems with the plumbing, weather-related emergencies, and power cuts, but there are also issues that we might not consider, something that’s not particularly feasible. You might live in a nice neighbourhood, but you could easily come back to find that you have a broken window purely because someone broke it by accident, rather than because you were broken into, especially if there’s plenty of pesky kids where you are! You need to be prepared for the unexpected, which is why understanding what common issues can occur in the home is one thing, but also bear in mind the next point.

Relying on your Neighbours

We need to rely on our neighbours, but in order to do this, we’ve got to be great neighbours in the first place. Having friendly neighbours while you’re away is a nice little asset, so you need to establish a good rapport with them and ensure that you share any contact information in case of an emergency. But, of course, it’s about making sure that you offer to do the same. The sense of community in the modern day is lacking, and therefore, something as simple as this can make a massive difference.

Creating the Illusion of a Lived-In Property

While you don’t need to go all Home Alone while you are away, you can give the appearance of being home through smart home technology and timers. Set timers on TVs, radios, and lights to simulate that you are at home doing these things. Smart home devices are controlled remotely, so you can adjust lighting or the heating from afar that will instantly create that all-important illusion.

Don’t Forget the Basics

The basics are invaluable. A reliable home security system, motion sensor lights, and asking friends to keep an eye on your property are all so simple. Remember if there’s a pile of letters on your doorstep, this is a surefire sign that nobody’s home and could result in your property being target number one. But you also need to have equipped coverage in terms of your insurance. Some policies may have specific limitations if your home is unoccupied for a certain amount of time. If you plan on venturing away from home for long periods of time, you’ve got to ensure that your policy is going to protect you during these times away.

If you like to go travelling a lot or you spend time away, you need to look after your property with a combination of security measures, some emergency preparedness, and, very simply, establishing a good relationship with your neighbours. We don’t want to worry about our home while we are away and taking some of these simple steps will always give you greater peace of mind.
