If you want to dress a bit more mindfully and you want to ensure that your fashion choices have as little impact on the planet as possible, then there are lots of things you can do to make your wardrobe more sustainable, as you will see below.

Stop washing your laundry so often

One of the easiest ways to start making your wardrobe more sustainable is to simply stop washing your clothes as often as you do now. This will save a whole lot of energy and resources, while also ensuring that your clothes last longer, which means you will not have to buy so many in the future.

If you can also avoid tumble drying, then that will have an even bigger impact on the environment and the longevity of your clothing too.

Start swapping

Instead of buying new clothes all the time, why not gather together all of those clothes you never seem to get around to wearing and gather together some friends who have done the same? You can then swap your clothing so that you all get something new to you that you love, without all of the extra resources that come with buying new.

Only buy outfits you love

Something else you can do is to stop buying clothes just because, We’re all guilty of buying a new top in the sale that we will realistically rarely if ever wear, but this is just a waste of money and resources that the planet can ill afford.

There is nothing wrong with buying new clothes from time to time, but make sure they are clothes you will love and wear time and time again. There’s nothing wrong with buying one of these beautiful plus size formal dresses if you go to a lot of smart events, for example, or buying a pair of boots you love and you know you will wear all winter long, but buying clothing as a one-off or clothing that will get little use over the years is not great from a sustainability point of view.

Rent an outfit

These days, if you do need an outfit for a one-off event like a wedding or awards ceremony, you can just as easily rent a stunning outfit as buy one, and doing so will mean fewer resources are used overall.

Not only that, but when you rent, you can gain access to beautiful designer garments that you might not be able to afford otherwise, which means you win and the planet does too.

Buy sustainable fabrics

If you want to make your wardrobe more sustainable, then you need to stop buying manmade fibres where possible and start buying natural, sustainable ones instead. Plants like bamboo which grows quickly and do not use as many resources are ideal, so it is worth taking some time to research which fabrics currently use the least water and chemicals in their production, as this does change from time to time.

Buy organic

As well as buying clothing made from natural fabrics, it is a good idea to choose organic fashion brands too. Organic clothing is much better for the planet because it does not use all of the nasty pesticides and chemicals that other fabrics do, which means it is better for the planet, animals and us humans too.

Avoid microfibres

Clothing that consists of microfibres is bad for the planet because those tiny fibres can get into the water system where they can cause pollution and make animals sick. Organic cotton is one fabric that can help you to avoid this problem, but there are others, so be sure to do your research.

Use recycled fabrics

Instead of buying brand new garments made with brand new materials, why not buy dresses that have been made from plastic bottles or trousers that have been made from recycled saris instead? They are much less burdensome on the planet, and there days, many of the top fashion labels are using recycles materials, so you will look great too.

Shop sustainable brands

Shopping brands that are certified sustainable, of course, is probably the easiest way to ensure any new additions to your wardrobe are as good for the planet as possible, but do your research because not all sustainable brands are what they seem.

You don’t have to make all these changes right away, and it might be a while before your wardrobe is completely sustainable, but little changes can make a big difference, and you will get there in the end, and look fabulous doing so!
