Each person will have their own preference when it comes to their perfect engagement ring. Though where you are in the world might sway what kind of engagement ring you’d like. It’s worth exploring where certain styles are the most popular, and how this piece of particular jewellery came to be.

Let’s start by looking at what style of ring is popular in each country. There are lots of styles of engagement rings, which ones stood out? It may come as no surprise that diamonds proved to be popular around the world. Diamond engagement rings were the most searched for in France, Germany, and right here in the UK. Sapphires were the most searched for in Singapore and New Zealand. Rose Gold was most popular in the USA, Canada and Australia.

When it comes to picking an engagement ring, it’s important to pick what’s right for you.  Jeremy Hinds, Sales Development Director at F.Hinds commented on the engagement ring research. He said, “If you are hoping your partner will propose with a less traditional stone or band option outside of the trends detailed in the research, it might be time to start dropping some hints.” It’s important a partner knows your specific jewellery tastes and doesn’t just follow whatever is trending.

History

It’s fascinating to look at engagement ring current trends from around the world, but how did they come to be? The evolution of the engagement ring goes back thousands of years. It first appeared in Ancient Rome where women were given rings made out of flint or bone to represent ownership. It wasn’t until 850 where an engagement ring had its official meaning. Fast-forward to 1477 and the first diamond engagement ring appeared. It was commissioned by Archduke Maximilian of Austria for his bride, Mary of Burgundy. Diamonds continued to be used over the centuries, and it’s clear to this day they remain a very popular choice for couples.

Changing Styles

However, it isn’t just the gemstone that makes up the engagement ring. The cut, the metal, and the style of the band all make a difference. These intricate details drastically change over the centuries. Some engagement ring designs have proven to be timeless. We are seeing more couples choosing less traditional styles.
