  >  Life   >  How to Feel Right at Home When Travelling the World

Travelling the world can be a fantastic experience. The great thing about it is that it can push you way beyond your comfort zone. That being said, sometimes you may feel as though you need a little piece of home. If you want to stop yourself from feeling homesick when you are out on your travels, then this guide will help you to learn some of the things you can do.

Focus on Familiar Scents

When you have arrived in your new city, you have to be on the lookout for a fragrance shop. If you have a favourite scent that you absolutely love or if you have something that reminds you of home or soothes you then you should try and give it a special place within your home. Scent has a way of bringing you back to a specific memory or time, and on top of this, it can influence your mood far more than you realise. If you are feeling a little bit disconnected or if you don’t feel at home in the city you are in, then dab some essential oil onto your wrist and then let the calming effects work their magic. If you can do this, then you will soon find that you are able to delve into a world that feels that bit more familiar.

Take Photos of your Friends and Family

Before you even think about going out and on the road, you need to try and get a few of your favourite photos printed. You can print photos of your pets if you want. The great thing about getting some photos printed is that they do not take up a lot of space in your suitcase, and you can even use them as a decorative reminder of your loved ones in your brand-new space. Place them in your living area or even use them as a conversation starter for any people who you may bump into. It doesn’t matter where you fly to next either, as photos can travel with you, and they are also ideal if you want to stay more grounded during your trip.

Cook a Good Meal

Food has its own way of taking you to another time or even another place. If you can, use food to your advantage and let it transport you right back to your hometown. If you want to make your apartment feel more like home, then try and christen it by making your favourite meal. It may be that you make your grandmother’s bolognese, or that you make a grilled cheese sandwich. Either way, cooking can help you to connect back with your home, and it can also give you a lot of comfort too. If you can, you need to try and use your meals as a way to connect with the memories you have. If you can do this, then you will soon find that it is easier than ever for you to form a connection with the space that you are living in now.

Bring your Own Comfort

There aren’t many things that can compete with the feeling of being cosy. As you venture around the world, you will soon notice that every city has a different sense of style, and for this reason, you may want to bring a few things with you so you can inject your own personality. Consider bringing a nice soft scarf with you as this will double up as a blanket if you want to spend a lazy night on the sofa. A lot of people also find that bringing a pillowcase with them can help them to feel more at ease. There’s something about being able to lay your head in a familiar place that can help you when you are trying to sleep, so try and be mindful of this if you can. Pillowcases do not take up a lot of room in your bag and they are a very good way for you to make the most out of your creature comforts.

Turn up the Music

A lot of people say that silence can be deafening. This is especially the case if you are staying somewhere that just doesn’t quite feel like yours. You may find that it is just far too easy to get distracted by random sounds that you may not be used to. It may be the sound of the fridge firing up or someone walking in the room above yours. Either way, if you want to try and drown out sounds like this, then one thing that you can do is bring a portable speaker. You can then choose an album to play in the background as you proceed to go about your day. This will help you to feel much more at home, and it will work wonders for your mental health too.

Buy Fresh Flowers

Nothing quite compares to the feel of fresh flowers. Plants can really make you feel better, so if you can, try and keep them handy if you feel as though you are out of your comfort zone. Spend one morning of your trip walking through the farmer’s market and pick out some of the plants that bring you the most joy. If you can do this, then you will soon find that it is easier than ever for you to get the result you are looking for. Flowers can brighten your apartment and they can also give you that personal touch.

Leave Room for House Clothes

If possible, you have to give some serious thought to the various pieces that you want to wear, so you can make sure that they align with the activities you want to participate in. If you are going on a hike, then it is important that you pack some active clothes, for example. With all of this in mind, you do not want to forget about basic house clothes. Remember to pack some pants or some soft leggings, as well as a comfortable top or two. Taking some slippers with you will also help. Anything you can do to make yourself feel relaxed will help you out greatly here so try and be mindful of this if you can.

Develop a Solid Routine

When it comes to travel, it helps to leave behind your routine. That being said, if you make the decision to quit the routine you have at home cold turkey, then this can be a bit intimidating. If you want to work around this without compromising your freedom or stability, then you can easily just develop a morning routine or a night-time routine instead. It may be that you make yourself a coffee in the morning. Bring some of your favourite coffee beans with you so you have the taste of home. If you can do this, then you will soon find that things work in your favour and that you are able to get a good routine.

Stay Connected

Finally, sometimes you have to accept that there is just no place like home. If possible, you have to set some time aside for your family, even if you know that they are on the other side of the world. If possible, download Skype or even WhatsApp as this is the best way for you to make sure that you can have those face-to-face chats without having to worry about teaching your parents all of the tech side of using another program. You can also send as many photos as you want, without worrying about data.
