5 places to visit for a winter staycation in the UK!

The UK is a treasure trove of destinations, with everything from coastal escapes, to city breaks and rural retreats – there really is something for everyone! Whilst summer may have passed us by, there is still plenty of time to get a holiday in this year, and with winter staycations on the rise, we’ve put together a roundup of some top places not to miss.

Cotswolds

Dotted with chocolate-box villages and picture-postcard cottages, it’s no wonder the Cotswolds is a popular winter destination in the UK. There’s plenty for families to do from exploring the many historical sites to walking nature trails or visiting the iconic cities of Bath, Bristol or Oxford which surround it.

A real foodies paradise, the Cotswolds is home to a wealth of independent farm shops, tearooms and restaurants which serve locally sourced foods; remember to book ahead to secure your place if you want to dine out.

Devon

For that perfect seaside escape, Devon is a must-visit. During the winter months, the coastal scenery and sprawling beaches offer the ideal destination for a crisp walk in the morning and the many hills offer more challenging routes for dedicated ramblers.

In addition to being a stunning location for outdoor exploring, Devon is also home to many quaint towns and villages which offer unique shops and eateries, perfect for a day out. After exploring during the day, there are also an array of stunning Devon Holiday Cottages to cosy up in during the evening next to a log burner with a hot chocolate or a perfect cup of tea.

Norfolk

A truly diverse destination, there’s plenty going on in Norfolk to tick everyone’s boxes this winter. Whether it’s taking a stroll down some of the 90 miles of unspoilt coastline, or taking in the culture that Norwich has to offer, or perhaps renting a barge and heading out on the Norfolk Broads for an adventure, there’s so much to do.

If you’re looking for a spot of birdwatching during winter, then Norfolk is definitely the place to be; the birds migrate over the coast and raptors come in to roost on the Broads, making a spectacular display.

Cairngorms

Spectacular scenery and remote villages make the Cairngorms a perfect retreat away from the hustle and bustle of daily life. If you fancy yourself a skier then there are plenty of opportunities to take to the mountains, with lessons available for all abilities, but remember to call ahead and make sure they are available for when you’re visiting.

The Cairngorms is also a brilliant destination for wildlife lovers, and the National Park is home to many amazing species of flora and fauna. Take your camera and set up in a quiet spot and see what you can spot but remember to wrap up warm.

Lake District

A popular destination throughout the year, the Lake District offers something special in the winter, when it quietens down for the off season. With atmospheric mist and weather that makes you want to cosy up, it’s a perfect destination for a mini getaway to embrace winter.

Head out in the mornings for a breezy walk with views of the mountains and lakes, and remember to pack your walking boots and waterproof and plot a route before you set off – this way you can make sure there’s a tea stop on the way!

The UK is home to plenty of amazing destinations, and these are just a few which offer a unique and cosy experience this winter. If you’re looking to head out on a staycation this year, remember to check government guidelines for the local areas, and book in advance where necessary.
