another place Ullswater Lake District review

If you follow me on Instagram, you may have spied my most recent trip to the Lake District, it was my second road trip to Cumbria but this time we set up camp (I mean, not literally) in Ullswater. We booked in for two nights at ‘lifestyle destination’ hotel, Another Place. The Lake District isn’t exactly renowned for its design-led hotels, you’re more likely to stumble across rustic B&B’s and countryside manors. Another Place is the Soho House of the Lake District, it offers Scandi design, modern dining options (yep, a vegan menu does exist), a fancy swimming pool and activities on the lake. Relaxed luxury, this is the ideal destination for a weekend stay with your partner or your family. Oh and it’s dog friendly too which means there’s a few furry visitors, bonus!

Set on the shores of Ullswater, Another Place offers unbeatable views and a truly peaceful location. It’s not as busy as the likes of Ambleside and Windermere but that’s the beauty of it. If you’re looking for a weekend of relaxation, you needn’t leave the resort, but there are several villages and towns just a few miles drive away that offer a pint and scenic view.

Another Place offers two styles of room, there’s the classic four-poster bed style rooms in the main house, and then rooms with a more Scandi countryside-chic appeal in the new wing. We stayed in one of the more modern rooms which featured a simple yet tasteful decor complete with statement chairs, vintage touches, and contemporary bathrooms. No heavily patterned curtains and tassels here! Compact and clean with everything we could need, lake view included.

The real appeal with Another Place is the facilities, the hotel has an ‘open house’ vibe with relaxation areas, living spaces complete with board games and a formal restaurant. Then we have the pièce de résistance, a 20m glass-fronted swimming pool overlooking towering mountains and the lake. It’s really quite breathtaking and yes, possibly one of the main reasons I chose to book Another Place. It didn’t disappoint. There is also an outdoor Canadian style hot tub, sauna, and treatment rooms where you can enjoy a relaxing massage. Tip: if you want to get a great Insta shot, get to the pool before 8.30am as it was completely empty but generally gets busier as the day goes on.

As with any trip, my vegan lifestyle is always a small concern in the back of my mind. It can be awkward when you’re trying to construct a meal out of side salads and chips, and I can see the disappointment in Charlie’s face when we find a great looking restaurant who aren’t accommodating to vegans. Soz Chaz. I was pleasantly surprised that Another Place was vegan friendly, from breakfast through to dinner. Breakfast is served in the formal Rampsbeck restaurant, and is operated on a self-serve basis with a fully cooked breakfast, waffles, pancakes, toast, fruit, granola and pastries. I enjoyed a cooked breakfast which included Linda McCartney sausages, mushrooms, tomatoes, beans and wholegrain toast. A real treat considering I’m usually left with a bowl of substandard fruit. I also tried out there dairy-free overnight oats which were delicious.

Lunch and dinner can be spent in either the Living Space or the Rampsbeck. The Living Space is an open plan area which offers bar snacks, and causal meals such as burgers, pasta and sharing boards. Whilst this area does not offer a dedicated vegan menu, the team were more than happy to adjust a few of the veggie options for me. I ended up going for a vegan sharing board which was lovely, but perhaps a couple of labelled vegan options could be introduced. The Rampsbeck is the hotels formal restaurant and boasts an impressive separate vegan menu. I was spoilt for choice but opted for the vegetable wellington and chocolate brownie, both of which were delicious.

Situated on the edge of the lake, Another Place is ideal for adventure seekers, you can enjoy a whole host of water sports but unfortunately the weather wasn’t fantastic so we didn’t end up hiring a canoe as planned. Breathes a sigh of relief. There are also a few different suggested walks, ranging from one hour to fives hours, ideal for keen hikers. Typically, Charlie asked the hotel reception which walk enjoyed the most pubs along the way…

A truly fantastic stay at Another Place, and definitely a hotel I would recommend if you’re looking for modern luxury in a rural environment.

I went to the Lake District for the first time in May and fell in love so much. Would love to stay here and see the more relaxing side to the Lakes!
